At Indiana University, you may need to move your content from one Google account to another, especially if you experience an account conflict as described in Resolve conflicts between Google at IU and personal Google accounts.

Take care to store institutional data using the appropriate resources. For details, see Options for storing files at IU.
When moving content between Google accounts in the same domain (for example, from one Google at IU account to another Google at IU account), you may wish to transfer ownership instead of exporting and importing your files. For instructions, see Make someone else the owner of your file.

Export your app-specific data

To download specific data from your apps (such as Google at IU My Drive, Google Calendar, or Google Contacts):

  • Google My Drive:Download a file.
    Collaborators for personal folders will not be retained.
  • Google Calendar: Export your calendar.
  • Google Contacts: To export your Google at IU contacts:
    1. Visit contacts.google.com and log in with the Google account you wish to export from.
    2. On the left, select More, and then Export.
    3. Select your preferred file format; if you wish to import your contacts into another Google account, select the Google CSV format.
    4. Click Export, and then store the file to your local device.
  • Mail: To preserve your email, UITS recommends that you forward any messages to a separate email account. Unfortunately, it is not possible to forward more than one message at a time within Gmail.

    To forward a message in Gmail:

    1. Visit gmail.com and log in with the Google account you wish to export from.
      Umail was retired on November 19, 2019. You can no longer access your Umail account and its associated services (such as email or Sites).
    2. Click the message you would like to forward.
    3. In the upper right corner, you should see the time and date at which you received the message. To the right of this, click the button with three stacked dots ( ).
    4. In the resulting drop-down menu, click Forward.
    5. Enter the email address of the separate email account.
    6. Click Send.

Import your app-specific data

You may move specific content into Google apps using the following methods.

  • Google My Drive: Upload files and folders to Google My Drive.
  • Google Calendar: Import events to Google Calendar.
  • Google Contacts: To export your Google at IU contacts:
    1. Go to contacts.google.com and log in with the Google account you wish to import contacts to.
    2. On the left, select More and then Import...
    3. Click Choose File and select your exported contacts file.
    4. Select Import.

Students may transfer all Google My Drive files and messages from their Google at IU account to another Google account. To complete this transfer, do the following:

  • Before you begin the transfer, UITS recommends that you delete any Google My Drive and email data that you no longer need.
  • If you do not own a particular file, then it will not be transferred for you. To retain access, the current owner will need to either transfer ownership or share the file with your new address.

Verizon App To Transfer Data

  1. Visit Transfer Your content.
  2. Sign in with your Google at IU account (username@iu.edu). If prompted, log in with your IU username and passphrase.
  3. Under 'Enter a destination account', enter the email address associated with your separate Google account. Click SEND CODE.
  4. A code will be sent to the address you entered in the previous step. To retrieve this code, log into your separate account, open the message whose subject is 'Verify your account', and click Get confirmation code. In the new tab that opens, copy your code and click CONTINUE.
  5. Under 'Verify your destination account', paste or enter the code from the previous step. Click VERIFY.
  6. Under 'Select content to copy and transfer', you can transfer your Google My Drive files, email messages, or both. By default, both will be selected. To de-select either Google My Drive or Gmail, click its blue toggle.
  7. When you're ready to begin the transfer, click START TRANSFER. You should receive an email message at the address you listed in step 3 once the transfer is complete.
